Starter Testing and Replacement in Edmonton
Turn the key and hear a click, or nothing at all? You can’t drive a car that won’t start to a shop, so Grayson Mobile Mechanic comes to you. We test the starter, battery, and connections where the car is parked and tell you what’s actually wrong.

No Tow Truck Needed
When a car won’t start, the usual plan is a tow to the shop, then a wait to find out what’s wrong. That costs time and money before anyone has even looked at the car.
We do it the other way around. We drive to your home, your work, or the parking lot where the car is sitting, and we start by finding the cause. Once you know what’s wrong, you can decide what to do next.
Sometimes the problem is the starter. Sometimes it’s the battery, a loose cable, or something else in the starting system. Testing first means you only pay to fix what’s actually broken.
What the Starter Does
The starter is a small but strong electric motor. When you turn the key or press the start button, it pulls a big burst of power from the battery and spins the engine until it fires up. Then it switches off and stays out of the way until the next start.
Because it does a heavy job every single time you start the car, it wears out over the years. Its internal parts and the switch that engages it can get tired, and its electrical connections can corrode or come loose.
Cold Edmonton mornings can make the job harder. Engine oil gets thick, the engine is harder to turn over, and the battery has less power to give. If a starter is already getting weak, winter is often when it gives up. The Alberta Motor Association has helpful tips on getting your vehicle ready for winter.
Signs Your Starter May Be Failing
Starter trouble can sound a lot like battery trouble. These are some of the signs that point toward the starter:
- A single click when you turn the key
- Dash lights come on, but the engine doesn’t turn
- A grinding noise when you try to start
- The car starts some days and not others
- A whirring sound, but the engine doesn’t catch
- Slow, sluggish cranking even with a good battery
Rapid clicking with dim lights often points to a weak battery instead. Not sure which you’re hearing? Describe it to us on the call.
How a Mobile Starter Visit Usually Works
- You call and tell us what’s happening. Clicking, grinding, or silence all help us narrow it down. Have your make, model, and year handy.
- We come to you and test. We might check the battery, the cables and connections, and the starter itself, so we’re not guessing.
- We explain what we found. You’ll know what’s wrong and what it will take to fix.
- We fix what we can on site. If the starter needs replacing and your vehicle allows it, we can take care of it right there.
Starters usually sit low on the engine, and on some vehicles they’re tucked in tight. Ask us on the call and we’ll let you know what to expect for yours.
If It’s Not the Starter
Plenty of no-starts come down to something else. A weak or old battery is a common one, especially in winter, and we can handle a battery replacement on the spot. Our guide on the signs your car battery is dying explains how to tell the two apart. If the car starts with a boost but dies again soon after, the alternator may not be charging the battery.
Wiring and connection faults fall under our electrical and lighting services, and if a warning light is on, engine diagnostics can help pin it down.
While You Wait for Us
- Make sure the car is in Park (or Neutral for a manual) and try once more
- Avoid cranking over and over, which can drain the battery and overheat the starter
- If you smell burning or see smoke, stop trying and call us
- Note any sounds you hear so you can describe them on the call
We cover Edmonton and nearby communities, including Sherwood Park, St. Albert, Spruce Grove, Stony Plain, Leduc, Nisku, Morinville, and Sturgeon County. Stuck at night or on the road? See our 24/7 emergency auto repair.
Starter Questions We Hear a Lot
Is it my starter or my battery?
It can be hard to tell. Rapid clicking with dim dash lights often points to the battery. Bright lights with a single click, or no sound at all, can point to the starter or its connections. A quick test on site is the surest way to know.
Can you replace a starter at my home or work?
In many cases, yes. It depends on your vehicle and where the starter sits. Tell us the make, model, and year when you call, and we’ll let you know if it’s something we can do on site.
Will a boost get my car going if the starter is bad?
A boost can help if the battery is the problem. If the starter itself is failing, a boost often won’t fix it, or the car may start once and then fail again later.
How much does starter replacement cost?
It depends on your vehicle and the part it needs. We’ll test first and talk through the cost with you before any work starts.
How long does it take?
That depends on the vehicle and how easy the starter is to reach. We’ll give you an idea when you call.
